Question
Ideal Gas Law Dalton's law 2. Its "Mole day"(Oct. 23) and to celebrate the CHM 131 students decide to fill up balloons with different gases. The classroom thermostat is set so that it is freezing (0°C) and the pressure in the room was 1 atm. If each student wanted to fill their balloons to be the same size (22.4L) what amount in moles would they need to add to their balloons? a. After each student fills up their balloons there is one last balloon and only one gas left (Oxygen) for the instructor to use. The instructor decides to use the remaining amount of 1.50 moles Oxygen gas to fill the last balloon. What volume will the balloon be at STP? b.Explanation / Answer
a)
T = 0 C = 273.15 k
P = 1 atm
at STP, 1 mol of any gas occupies = 22.4 L
so that, each ballon requires 1 mole of gas.
b)
at STP , 1 mol = 22.4 L
1.5 mol = 22.4*1.5/1 = 33.6 L
volume of ballon = 33.6 L
