Question

if a student left the lid off the calorimeter after adding the warm metal, would the calculated value of SH for the unknown be higher, lower, or the same as it would be if the lid was on the calorimeter? Explain your answer. if a student left the lid off the calorimeter after adding the warm metal, would the calculated value of SH for the unknown be higher, lower, or the same as it would be if the lid was on the calorimeter? Explain your answer. if a student left the lid off the calorimeter after adding the warm metal, would the calculated value of SH for the unknown be higher, lower, or the same as it would be if the lid was on the calorimeter? Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

The calculated value without lid would have lower value...

This happens because without lid whatever the water vapour generated during combustion will escape into the atmosphere hence no condensation takes place therefore no latent heat of condensation.Thats why some amount of energy will be skipped from the calorimeter whereas when the lid is there the water vapour liberated lie within the calorimeter and furthur undergoes condensation liberating some amount of energy in the form of latent heat of condensation which is added to the total amount of heat energy liberated by the warm metal..
