Question

Researchers at Indiana University 0.0300T investigated the solubility behavior of potassium metaperiodate (KIO). The solubility of KIO4 was determined 25°C in solutions containing either Lino, or KNO3 as a supporting electrolyte. The solubility plot is shown below with box shaped rmarkers for one supporting electrolyte and cross- shaped markers for the other supporting electrolyte. 0.0250 . 0.0200 a. Calculate the Ksp for KIO, under infinite0.0150 dilution conditions. For each set of KIO4 solubility data, identify the supporting electrolyte and properly explain the differences in solubility b. 0.0100 0.0050 0 0.02 0.04 0.06 0.08 0.1 0.12 Electrolyte molarity (M)

Explanation / Answer

The solubility reactions of the electrolytes are as follows:

KIO4 (s)<---> K+ (aq) +IO4-(aq)[partial dissociation as it is a weak electrolyte]

KNO3 --->K+ (aq) +NO3-(aq) [complete dissociation as it is a strong electrolyte]

LiNO3 ----> Li+ (aq) + NO3-(aq) [ complete dissociation as it is a weak electrolyte]

Solubility of KIO4 increases with dilution and reaches its maximum value at infinite dilution.

With strong electrolyte as supporting one,KNO3, the solubility of KIO4 decreases with increase in KNO3 concentration due to common ion effect .The common ion K+ increases with the increase in concentration of KNO3,thus it shifts the equilibrium of KIO4 solubility in the reverse direction ,due to excess of K+ (Le Chatlier's principle)

On infnite dilution ,the conentration of KNO3 is minimum (due to increased volume of solution) so KIO4 is soluble to its maximum extent.

With LiNO3,there is no common ion as in KIO4, so it does not interfere with the solubility equilibrium of KIO4.On infinitely diluting the solution,the solubility of KIO4 is maximum,LiNO3 must also be minimum to allow KIO4 ions to get dissolved.

a)It is the point between 0.02M and 0.025M of the y-axis,the maximum value of solubility with minimum electrolyte or no electrolyte

[K+]=[IO4-]=0.0225M

Ksp=[K+][IO4-]=(0.0225M)^2=5.062*10^-4

b)Box shaped markers is for KNO3 ,as KIO3 solubility decreases with incresing electrolyte concenration due to common ion effect

cross-shaped markers is for LiNO3 as solubility of KIO3,increases with increasing electrolyte concentration or diluting the solution with respect to KIO4
