Question

5. List any problems with the followng set up. Clamg 6. The temperature at the head of a fractional distillation column was measured at selected times during the distillation of a mixture of toluene (b.p.-111 C) and hexane (b.p. 69 C). Initially, the temperature is 25° C After a while, the temperature rises to -69 C, where it holds for several minutes. Then, the temperature drops briefly to-40°C before rising again to 111°C, where it remains steady. Describe what is happening and what is causing each of these temperature changes

Explanation / Answer

5.

Reverse the fractional distilation column. That is the end of fractional distilation column connected to the boiling flask should be connected to the resever flask, and the end of fractional distilation column connected to the resever flask should be connected to the boilng flask.

6.

At temperature 69 oC, the hexane get distilled out, that is hexane converts in gas phase and there by gets into the distillation column, gets condensed and converts back to liquid phase and gets collected into the resever flask.

After all the hexane is distilled out, the temperature is reduced to 40 oC, and then again it is heated gradually to 111 oC.

At temperature 111 oC, the toluene get distilled out, that is toluene converts into gas phase and there by gets into the distillation column, gets condensed and converts back to liquid phase and gets collected into the resever flask.
