Question

"I am redo the exam and I have to explain why the choices are correct or wrong. So please help me.

Which of the following statement about resonance structures is FALSE

A Resonance structure illustrate how electron can be localized over multiple atoms.
B Resonance structure attempt to correct a fundamental defect in Lewis structures
C Resonance structure illustrate that molecules are not a single structure and in fact the molecule may oscillate back and forth between multiple Lewis structures.
D None of the above

The answer of this question is C. So please help explain why A and B are correct and why C is incorrect by exploitation with the example. Thanks."

Explanation / Answer

A == electrons are localised over atoms in resosnance . ie they are shared between these atoms ..... B = lewis structure failed to explain the partial charge of molecules , explained by resonanace theory c = moleciules do not oscillate ..it is always the electrons which can move in a structure ..hence false
