Question
Twitch response and recruitment. What do you conclude happened to the number of fibers contracting as the current was raised from threshold to that required to produce a maximal contraction? Why does varyong the stimulus strength affect the twitch force? Summatation and tetanus. The stimulus interval has a profound effect on the contrafction force of the muscle. In your own words explain what happend when the muscle was stimulated in rapid succession. What was the minimum time required for the subject's muscle twitches to add together?
Explanation / Answer
Twitch response: A brief contractile response of a skeletal muscle elicited by a single maximal volley of impulses in the neurons supplying it.
1. The number of muscle fibers contracting increases as the voltage increases.
2. As the stimulus strength increases the number of motor units recruited increases, which generates a greater muscle tension.
3. When stimuli are delivered in rapid succession to produce summation of twitches, the muscle gets tetanized, i.e., it remains contracted and does not relax
