1) Always remember this simple chemistry rule. 'Like' dissolves 'Like'. It will help you out throughout your studies.
Hydrocarbons are non polar and water is polar. If hydrocarbons and water mix, it will disrupt the H-bonds and dipole forces between H2O molecules. That would be highly unfavorable. As a result, water and hydrocarbons will form 2 layers. An aqueous layer (layer with polar molecules, ions, and H2O) and an organic layer, where all hydrophobic molecules will reside. By the same reasoning, hydrocarbons would likely dissolve well in non-organic solvents.
