Is decreasing the length of your blood vessels a viable option? Explain!
The arterioles (small arteries) are surrounded by circular muscles. In order to increase the blood flow rate by a factor of 5, what percentage increase in the radius of a blood vessel is needed? (This is called vasodilatation.)
Arteries in the human body can be constricted when plaque builds up on the inside walls. How does this affect the blood flow rate through this artery? Is it possible for the body to keep the flow rate constant? Explain!
Explanation / Answer
Is increasing blood pressure 5 - 10 times higher a viable option? What percentage increase in blood pressure is reasonable? Explain!
An increase in blood pressure 5-10 times is not a viable option. Normal blood pressure for adults is systolic blood pressure below 120 mmHg and diastolic pressure below 80 mmHg. In case of long term increase in hypertension, it leads to heart diseases. Blood pressure of upto increase of 130 eventhough is not viable, its touching the borderline of hypertension. Whereas blood pressure of 140 mmHg itself is said tobe in hypertention. So hypertention constricts the arteries by changing their diameter, so the force required to pump the volume of blood increases. It is critical and leads to sudden death.
