Question

Below are spectra of three compounds. One of the compounds contains chlorine, the other bromine
and the third sulfur. Match the spectra A, B and C with corresponding compounds, explain your choice.

Sorry for having 3 picks but dont have enough points for 3 seperate questions. I also hope you can see the images. please help. really need it been trying to figure out this question but cant figutr out which one is which. I have an idea of each but not sure and why. please expalin why. thanks so much would give a lot more for this question but no more points. thanks so much.

Explanation / Answer

First spectrum is of bromine containing compound because bromine has two natural isotopes 79Br and 81Br in 1:1 ratio (because their natural abundance ratio is 1:1). You can see there are two such peaks which have difference in their m/z values by the value of two units and peak are of 1:1 ratio in terms of intensity. -------------------------- The third spectrum is of Chlorine compound because chlorine has two natural isotopes 35Cl and 37Cl with natural abundance 3:1. See carefully in third spectra the two peaks on left side are having two closely placed peaks with difference in their m/z values by the value of two units and peak are of 3:1 ratio (same as the ratio of their natural abundance) in terms of intensity. ------------------The third spectrum is of sulfur compound as it does not have any 3:1 or 1:1 peaks separated by 2 units. Also remember sulfur has 4 stable natural isotopes therefore there will be 4 peaks for each major peak containing sulfur. ------ I am answering only in terms of which atom contains which heteroatom and not the structure of the compound.
