How does the variation between the different types of milk affect the ecological succession?

Write a paragraph or two describing another ecological succession which takes place over a longer period of time, for example a succession beginning with the retreat of a glacier or a small pond or a volcanic eruption. Cite your references.

Explanation / Answer

pH changes in different types of milk over time due to the changes that occur in the milk. The change will be due to the addition of external substances that may be produced within or through external source.

pH of following are

Whole Milk: 6.4 to 6.8

Chocolate Milk: 7.03 (due to addition of chocolate powder which increases the alkalinity of milk)

Buttermilk: 4.58 (the lactic acid is released into the milk by bacteria that acidifies and lowers the pH).

consistency changes in the different types of milk over time due to the reactions that occur in milk with time.

Whole Milk: the consistency of whole milk is due to the protein and fat contents in it.

Chocolate Milk: the consistency of chocolate milk varies with the addition of the chocolate powder. It becomes thick.

Buttermilk: here thick consistency is resulted with the production of butter in it. Flakes of butter will be floating over the surface.

odor also changes in the different types of milk over time, with the reactions within the milk and bacteria present in it.

Whole Milk: normal odor is present in whole milk which is devoid of fermentation.

Chocolate Milk: pleasant odor will be there due to chocolate in it.

Buttermilk: sour odor is present due to the lactic acid production with time.

Ecological succession is defined as series of transition changes in composition with ecological time.

Variation between the different types of milk affects the ecological succession. With time there will be orderly changes in the milk consistency, pH and odor. There will be growth of microbes seen in the milk.

Succession begins from a volcanic eruption in which the soil left after eruption will be subjected to changes with time and growth of plants is seen. The abandon land will be transferred into a vegetative land with time.
