Question

1. a) Write the equation for the esterification reaction between ethanol and acetic  acid (ethanoic acid)

b) Write the equation for the esterification reaction between ethanol and acetic

         anhydride(ethanoic acid anhydride)

c) What is the same and what is different between the products of the reaction in (a) and the reaction in (b)?.

2. Write an equation for the hydrolysis of methyl ethanoate (methyl acetate)

  a) in HCl solution

  b) in NaOH solution

3.

  a) in HCl solution

  b) in NaOH solution

4. Aspirin that has been stored for a long time may give a vinegar odor and give a purple color with FeCl3.

a)      Write an equation for the reaction that would cause this to happen. Write the name for each organic reactant and

product.

b)      In the equation you have drawn in 6a, circle and label the product that is responsible for the purple color and the

product that is responsible for the vinegar odor

c)      What name is given to this type of reaction?

Explanation / Answer

1)CH3COOH + C2H5OH ===> CH3COOC2H5 + H2O.

2)

3)it protonates one of the oxygens (I forgot which one) so that you have an O-H group with a (+) charge on the oxygen. this allows stuff to move around and break one of the carbon-oxygen bonds, causing the "hydrolysis

"NaOH + HCl H2O + Na+ + Cl-

(3)NaOH + CH3COOH H2O + Na+ + CH3COO

3.b

4vinegar odor?

well, i'm not sure... but the great composition of salicylic acid (major chemical ingridient in aspirin) would definitely produces this kind of odor sooner or later...

perhaps this composition would happen because of the prolonged exposure to air??

sorry i'm not sure. its just my hypotheses. But i'll keep checking your questions to find out about the answer too
