The experimental mass of caffeine'16 cups b. How does the value you cakculated in the previous question compare with the accepted average of 30 mg per oup? c Using the accepted average of 30 mg of caffeine per cup, calculate your percent recovery mass recovered accepted value 100- if your percent recovery was more or less than 100%, give at least one reason why this might have occurred. d, CARBLINA S-8 Scanned by CamScann Scanned by Can

Explanation / Answer

1.

a) here given the extraction results based on 2 tea bags, 2 tea bags gives 560 mg of caffine.

hence for single tea bag extraction will be 280 mg (560/2) of caffine and for single tea bags forming 8 cups, caffine per cup will be = 280/8 = 35 mg/cup.

Also for 2 tea bags caffine / 16 cups = 560/16 = 35 mg/cup

b) From the above calculated data the value of caffine (mg/cup) is 5 mg/cup more than the accepted value of 30mg/cup.

c) Now for 35mg/cup caffine the total caffine recovered from 2 tea bags is 560 mg.

For accepted value of 30mg/cup total caffine recovered from 2 tea bags will be = 30x16 =480 mg

% recovery = (mass recovered/mass of accepted value) x 100 = (560/480) x 100 = 116.67 %

d) The %age recovery is more than 100 % may be due to the more caffine in the tea as expected.
