Question
What's the purpose of running a background IR Spec with isopropyl alcohol?
Ok so I need help writing my lab report. For the experiment we synthesized aspirin from salicylic acid and acetic anhydride. So our lab manual told us to run the IR spec in chloroform solution... For reasons not explained to us, we were told instead to run the aspirin through the IR by itself using isopropyl alcohol as a background. Can someone please explain the purpose that the alcohol serves and include links to references please.
Explanation / Answer
Isopropyl alcohol gets vaporized quickly when compared to chloroform, the main purpose of background run is to stabilize the energy absorbed by the detector during the radiation. So during the background run with isopropyl alcohol this liquid evaporates quickly and the random energy coming during radiation at different wavelengths is being absorbed by the plates and surrounding which minimizes the scaterring and other unnecessary variables which will later involve in sample IR spec. Whereas condensed chloroform vapors might get involved with sample and as a result the absorption at detector will be wrong.
