Question

31. Which of the following is true? a) By spontaneous we mean that the reaction is always endothermic since a significant amount of energy in the form of heat is absorbed. b) By spontaneous we mean that the reaction or process will always proceed to t (as written) even if very slowly. Increasing the temperature always speed up the reaction, but it does not affect the spontaneity of the reaction. c) By spontaneous we mean that the reaction or process will always proceed to the left (as written) even if very slowly. Increasing the temperature will allow the reaction to reach the equilibrium faster. d) By spontaneous we mean that the reaction or process will always proceed to the right (as written) even if very slowly. Increasing the temperature may speed up the reaction. e)By spontaneous we mean that the reaction is always exothermic since a significant amount of energy in the form of heat is released.

Explanation / Answer

By spontaneous , we mean that the reaction can proceed by itself. for example, hot cup of tea, its temperature decreases automatically i.e. the reaction is spontanous. thus the spontaneous reaction is an exothermic reaction. So, option e is correct.

when reaction is spontaneous reaction will shift to the right i.e.to the other side (product). reaction is exothermic so according to le-cahtlier Principle, when temperature is increased, reaction will shift to the left as product will gain the temperature at convert back to the reactant. for example: if we give heat back to the cold tea, it will again gain the temperature and will become hot i.e. reaction will become reversible. so option a,b,c,d are incorrect.

Le-Chatlier Principle state that if a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in pressure, temperature and concentration then, equilibrium will shift in a direction to undo the effect of change.
