What are the coordination number (C.N.) and oxidation number (O.N.) of the transition metal atom in [Co(NH3)2(H2O)2Cl2]+Please explain your answer and how coordination numbers work What are the coordination number (C.N.) and oxidation number (O.N.) of the transition metal atom in [Co(NH3)2(H2O)2Cl2]+
Please explain your answer and how coordination numbers work What are the coordination number (C.N.) and oxidation number (O.N.) of the transition metal atom in [Co(NH3)2(H2O)2Cl2]+
Please explain your answer and how coordination numbers work
Explanation / Answer
The Co compound is attached with two NH3, two H2O and two Cl2
Hence the coordination number will be equal to 6 (since these are all mono ligands)
Now coming to oxidation number
NH3 and H2O are neutral in nature, whereas Cl will have a charge of -1
Let the charge of Cr be x
x + 2(-1) = overall charge = 1
x - 2 = 1
x = 3
Hence the charge on transition metal Cr will be +3
