Question

Part A

A very flexible helium-filled balloon is released from the ground into the air at 20. ?C. The initial volume of the balloon is 5.00 L, and the pressure is 760. mmHg. The balloon ascends to an altitude of 20 km, where the pressure is 76.0 mmHg and the temperature is ?50. ?C. What is the new volume, V2, of the balloon in liters, assuming it doesn't break or leak?

Express your answer numerically in liters.

Part B

Consider 4.40 L of a gas at 365 mmHg and 20. ?C . If the container is compressed to 3.00 L and the temperature is increased to 37 ?C , what is the new pressure, P2, inside the container? Assume no change in the amount of gas inside the cylinder.

Express the pressure numerically in millimeters of mercury.

Explanation / Answer

According ideal gas equation,

P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2 at fic=xed number of moles

P1 and P2 are initial and final pressures

V1 and V2 are initial and final volumes

T1 and T2 are initil and final teperatures in Kelvins

P1 = 760 mm of Hg and P2 = 76 mm of Hg

V1 = 5 L and V2 = ?

T1 = 20 + 273 = 293 K

T2 = -50 + 273 = 223 K

From the formula,

760*5/293 = 76*V2/223

V2 = final volume of the ballon = 38.055 L

Part B

similar to the above part,

P1 = 365 mm of Hg and P2 = ?

V1 = 4.4 L and V2 = 3 L

T1 = 20 + 273 = 293 K

T2 = 37 + 273 = 310 K

according to the formula,

365*4.4/293 = P2*3/310

P2 = final pressure = 566.394 mm of Hg
