Question

Experiment 20 Name Lab Day Room Pre-Laboratory Exercise: Electrolysis What is the difference between an electrolytic and a voltaic (galvanic) reaction? 2. In this experiment, a Nal solution will be used to observe an electrolytic reaction a. Write the dissolution of Nal into water. This will be the solution present in the cell b. In this cell, there are two possible oxidation reactions that might occur. Write the two half reactions and their corresponding potential values. c. Which of the two reactions will occur in electrolysis? d. There are two possible reduction reactions that might occur. Write the two half reactions and their corresponding potential values e. Which of the two reactions will occur in electrolysis? continued on the back Appendix 45

Explanation / Answer

1) An electrolytic reaction is one where, electrical energy gets converted into chemical energy. In otherwords, chemical changes occurs as a result of applied electrical energy. In an electrolytic cell anode is the positive electrode and cathode is the neagtive electrode. On the otherhand, in a voltaic cell or electrochemical cell, chemical energy gets converted into electrical energy i.e- chemical changes gives rise to electricity. In an electrolytic cell anode is the neagtive electrode and cathode is the positive electrode.
