Question

Match the following aqueous solutions with the appropriate letter from the column on the right.

1. 0.18 m MgI2 A. Lowest freezing point 2. 0.23 m KI B. Second lowest freezing point 3. 0.25 m BaS C. Third lowest freezing point 4. 0.52 m Sucrose(nonelectrolyte) D. Highest freezing point Match the following aqueous solutions with the appropriate letter from the column on the right. 1.0.18 m Mgl2 2. 0.23 m KI 3. 0.25 m BaS 4. 0.52 m Sucrose(nonelectrolyte) A. Lowest freezing point B. Second lowest freezing point C. Third lowest freezing point D. Highest freezing point

Explanation / Answer

The above question is based on the depression of freezing point that is on addition of non-volatile impurities or compounds to a solvent ,it decreases the freezing point of the solution ,so it's a colligative property which means it depends upon the no. Of solute particles added.

For MgI2: no. Of solute particles is 3 since there's one Mg and two I- , so total concentration is 3* .18= .54m

For KI it is 2*0.23= 0.46m

For BaS is not much soluble in water so it will stay around .25 but in diluted solution it will be 2*0.25=0.50 m

For sucrose ,since it is a nonelectrolyte it will stay 0.52 m only.

So from the above data one can conclude that solution of MgI2 will have lowest freezing point .

Sucrose will have second lowest.

BaS will have third lowest and KI will have fourth lowest freezing point.
