Please descnbe its climate region, major climate characteristics, vegetation, and wildlife as shown in the movie S. Discuss some important physical factors that shape the characteristics and global distribution of ecosystems on the earth using examples from the movieExplanation / Answer
1. Arctic tundra is the characteristic biome and further south is taiga biome. There are no trees or vegetation due to the poor intensity and short duration of sunlight. The Arctic has long winters and short summers. During the summer, 24 hours of daylight will be available and the temperature would be around -30 degrees. The Arctic is completely cold desert and the polar bears mainly feed on seals. Trees are found only 500km from the Arctic and the forest is called Boreal forests. Boreal forest contains only needle-shaped leaves and supports minimal animal life. But, Boreal forests cover one-third of all the trees in the earth and are the largest contributor of oxygen to the atmosphere. The Arctic has mainly polar bears and seals. Further south, there are Caribous and wolves that hunt on them. Caribous are deer like species and they migrate around 2000 miles for fresh pasture.
2. Temperate deciduous forest biomes. They are spread over North America, Europe and Russia. Here the coniferous are replaced by big leaves as the summers are strong enough. In winter, these trees shed their leaves and animals have to either hibernate or migrate in order to survive. Deer, duck, birds, butterflies, insects, Amur leopard etc. are the common wildlife. Hunting and destruction of habitat have reduced the number of Amur leopard and they are now a highly endangered species.
3. Tropical rain forest biome. They receive sunlight of good intensity all-round the year. The vegetation will be very thick that only less than 2% of the sunlight manages to reach the ground. They form only 3% of the global vegetation but are home for almost 50% of all the plant and animals. The tropical rain forest biome supports more wild life than any other biome. Monkeys, birds, insects etc. are seen here.
4. Savanna is the biome in Southern Africa were elephants and other wildlife are seen migrating seasonally for water. These biomes don’t contain thick vegetation and are mostly dry. Grass and isolated trees are the major vegetation in this biomes. They are found in areas adjacent to the equators where hot and warm climate prevails. Lions, elephants, zebras, buffalos, giraffes are the dominant wildlife. The summers are dry and intense and force the life forms to migrate for water.
