Question

I need help understanding this excerpt:

Quantitative formulation: A significant gap remains between soil architectural parameters and field-measured soil functions at different scales. Pore space is a new arena for pedologic research, as it emphasizes the nature, origin, and significance of pore space in various soil functions. However, how to link pedologic features, pore characteristics, and soil functions at different scales is a challenging and yet critical question to be answered. The link between soil maps and soil functions is also needed, especially quantitatively, but it is largely missing.

I don't understand what it means ' at different scales.' Also, how can we link soil maps and soil functions?

Explanation / Answer

Soil at different scales means two different soil map prepared by different institutes at skills of 1.200 000 and 1.25 000 covering identical Areas were compared to determine the accuracy of reconnaissance. these soil map for widely used in land resource assessment studies and Turkey. For this purpose the soil maps ere digitised and perform the data set. Then the map layer with compared by using GIS Technology in order to set the soil properties and land characteristics. The reconnaissance soil map at the scale of 1.200 000 has the highest accuracy for the slope due to the fact that a topographic maps have been used as basic map for the field studies. The accuracy of other properties and descending order is as follows: slope >depth > salinity > texture > drainage > top soil texture. In addition physiographic and topographic patterns of soil also affect the accuracy of map. The reconnaissance soil map was found to be less accurate in flood Plains were the slope does not affect other soil properties.

Linkage of soil maps and soil function are

We know that there are at least number of soil types because they have been mapped. in past 50 years many countries of the world have been involved in making maps of the soil to determine the range of soil types in the territories were the soil occur and how they can be used. Soil mapping involve the location and identifying the different soil that occur, information about their location, nature , properties and potential use , and recording this information on maps and in supporting document to show the spatial distribution of every soil. In order to map and identify different type of soil it is necessary to have a system of soil classification. just as in the case of plant where we have the linnaean system , so an equivalent approach is needed for soil. Soil classified have provided a major challenge one that has yet to be adequately solved. traditional soil mapping is conducted with an auger and spade at interval throughout the landscape. The interval between inspection can be according to a predetermined grid or more often are based upon the judgement of the serveyor who uses the knowledge of interrelationship between soil type and landscape ,geology, vegetation etc.

soil have many important functions. perhaps the best appreciated is a function to support the growth of Agricultural and horticultural crops. Soil is the mainstay of agriculture and horticulture forming as it does the medium in which growth and ultimately the yield of food producing crop occurs. farmer and gardener have a worked with their soil over many centuries to produce increasing amount of food to keep pace with the need of burgeoning world population. The soils natural cycle go a long way in ensuring that the soil can provide an adequate physical , chemical and biological medium for crop growth. The farmer and horticulturalist have also become skilled in managing soil so that these natural cycle can be added to as necessary to facilitate adequates oil support and increasing yield to enhance production. Although it is difficult to write the importance of different soil function since all the vital to some extent this function of supporting world agriculture and horticulture is a key one in a Preservation and advancement of human life on this planet.
