Question
Open .txt files with Excel 2010 using 'open with...'
Hi. We are at a college campus, in the IT department. We recently migrated our computers to run office 2010, and some computers are unable to use excel to open .txt files with the 'open with' function. we can find excel in the browse list just fine, but when you select it, it goes back to the main 'open with' list and doesn't have excel selected... we can open the files fine from within excel, but there has to be a way to make it work from the file itself. it used to work just fine with office 2007... also, some of our computers have no problem with this, but some do. when we tried running "...excel.exe /regserver" it gave an error saying "...excel.exe /regserver" was not found. any ideas??
Thanks for help !!
Explanation / Answer
Hi..
This worked for me with Windows 7 and Office 2010..
It involves editing the Windows Registry. If you are not comfortable with doing this, don't!
Open the Windows Registry Editor:
Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTApplicationsEXCEL.EXEshellopencommand
If the sub-key in the right pane shows this:
"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice12EXCEL.EXE" "%1"
Change it to this:
"C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice14EXCEL.EXE" "%1"
Hopefully it will work for you :)
