Question

1- Imagine that you work as a network administrator for a small manufacturing company. The company wants to upgrade its network infrastructure to include 1000Mb switches and 10/100/1000 auto sensing network interface cards in each desktop. Recommend the cabling type that you would use in this network, and provide a rationale to your superiors.

2- Imagine that your company is using 100BaseTX cabling, and you need to provide access to a machine that is located 400 meters from the switch. Recommend one (1) strategy to accomplish this task, and justify your chosen strategy.

Explanation / Answer

1) In most cases Ethernet rated at CAT6 is enough but much will depend on what you are using the network for, speed needed, possible future upgrades and how many feet of cable will be needed.

2)

Using 100BaseTX cable, the maximum distance between two network devices is 100 meters.

To extend the distance between devices slightly, add a hub. Now the maximum distance between devices is increased to 200 meters. So just keep adding hubs (a.k.a repeaters) until you achieve your desired length
