Question

SPORTS MEDICINE * NEED ASAP

You are an 18 year old athlete and have been confirmed by an MRI that you have a complete rupture of you ACL in your knee. You plan to stay active and play sports for many years to come. Your doctor has recommended ACL reconstruction surgery. You have researched the options to this surgery. Which specific ACL surgery is best for you? Explain the specifics of the surgery and why it is the best reconstructive surgery for you and your lifestyle. Would this surgery be the best for a non-active 55 year old? What specific ACL reconstruction surgery would be more appropriate for this individual? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

The knee joint is composed of three separate articulations. There are two articulations between the femur and tibia and one between the patella (knee bone) and the femur. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is an intrasynovial and intracapsular ligament, which aids in limiting the anterior movement of the femur or majorly stabilizes the knee, and limits the anterior translation of tibia on femur. ACL limits the hyper extension of the knee and runs upwards, backwards and laterally.

Here, an 18 year old athlete has ruptured ACL in the knee, so the athlete should have the ACL reconstruction surgery as a part of treatment and it has to be performed arthroscopically. For this surgery, the surgeon has to take an Autograft (Hamstring, Quadriceps and patellar tendon) from the athlete to perform surgery. So, that the athlete cannot have autoimmune reactions and can recover very quickly. The athlete has to stay active and play sports, so using own tissue for surgery would be a better option than to using an allograft.
