To solve a case study, you may have to refer to the glossary or index, other chapters in this textbook, and other resources.
Agnes is an elderly woman with osteoporosis. She recently sustained a severe bone fracture for no apparent reason (she did not fall or otherwise injure herself). The fracture was not treated for some time, and as a result, Agnes developed osteomyelitis. Based on what you know of osteoporosis, how do you explain her mysterious fracture? How can a fracture progress to osteomyelitis?
The three disorders mentioned in this case study are just three of many different skeletal diseases/disorders that can occur in bone. There are 5 main types of disorders that can occur in bone. Which categories do osteoporosis and osteomyelitis belong to? Briefly describe a disorder from one of the two categories of skeletal diseases/disorders not mentioned in the case study. When discussing the disorder make sure to include causes and treatments. Also feel free to share any stories you may have of broken bones. My story is that I have never had a broken bone!
Explanation / Answer
Osteoporosis is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and they are more prone to get fractured. This condition is due to loss of bone tissue, vitamin D, calcium deficiency. Due to this condition bone cannot sustain the body weight, and crushed onto each other, resulting in bone fracture.
A bone-fracture, or bone injury may result in a bone infection. Bacteria or fungal antigen can enter the bone and causes infection that leads to osteomyelitis (an infection of bone).
