Job Summary

Merriam-Webster’s defines professionalism as a “set of attitudes and behaviors believed to be appropriate to a particular occupation”. A recent white paper on professionalism defined it as “the active demonstration of the traits of a professional”. Others have described professionalism as “constituting those attitudes and behavior that serve to maintain patient interest above [physician] self-interest,” and “displaying values, beliefs and attitudes that put the needs of another above your personal needs”(8,9). It has also been written that:“Professionalism is displayed in the way pharmacists conduct themselves in professional situations. This definition implies a demeanor that is created through a combination of behaviors, including courtesy and politeness when dealing with patients, peers, and other health care professionals. Whether dealing with patients or interacting with others on a health care team, it is important to possess and display—an empathetic manner.”
