Explanation / Answer

this is quite a hard one it took me sometime too. 1) check that each element is balanced, i chose to start with thehardest one, Oxygen. 2) there is a total of 3 Oxygens on the left, 8 on the right. sonow, 3x=8 x=8/3 so multiply HNO3 by 8/3. which gives each side 24Oxygens. 3) now we dont want fractions, so multiply everything by3.        3CuS + 8 HNO3 ---->3 Cu(NO3)2 +3 S + 3 NO + 3H2O 4) now, there are 8 Nitrogens on the left and 9 on the right. Wealso have 8 Hydrogens on the left and 6 on the right. Now takea look at 3NO and 3H2O. 5) if we reduce 3NO to2NO, the Nitrogens would decrease to 8, matching theleft side. This also decreases the Oxygens on the right side to 23,but if we increase 3H2O to4H2O the Oxygens rebalance. Doing this alsobalances the H. 6) recheck and you will see everything is balanced. 3 CuS + 8HNO3 ----> 3Cu(NO3)2 + 3 S +2 NO + 4H2O
