Question

silver nitrate = AgNO3 (aq) copper = Cu (s) the copper bb was placed in silver nitrate, turned black aftera few seconds, then changed to silver after about 30 seconds. what are the products and their states (g,l,s)? i think its Ag + CuNO3 but i could be wrong. what is being oxidized and what is being reduced? this is a redox reaction right? silver nitrate = AgNO3 (aq) copper = Cu (s) the copper bb was placed in silver nitrate, turned black aftera few seconds, then changed to silver after about 30 seconds. what are the products and their states (g,l,s)? i think its Ag + CuNO3 but i could be wrong. what is being oxidized and what is being reduced? this is a redox reaction right?

Explanation / Answer

From the standard electrode potential data at 298K, the standard reduction potential of the Ag & Cuare Ag+ + 1e- .........>Ag            E0 = +0.80V Cu+ + 1e- ...........> Cu          E0 = +0.52V The metal with low reduction potetial reducess (it selfis oxidized) the metal with high reduction potential . So that Cu is oxidized and Ag is reduced . It is aredox reaction . Products are in solid state .
