Question

Analysis of unordered yeast tetrads from the cross +++ x a b c yielded the data:
Tetrad Class Spores # of asci
1. ab c a b c +++ +++ 36
2. ab c a+ c + b+ +++ 14
3. a++ a++ + b c + bc 32
4. ab + a++ + b c ++ c 16
5. ab + a b+ ++ c ++ c 2

The question is which of these genes are linked and what is the map distance? The textbook got genes b and c to be linked and map distance = 17cM, but I want to know how to determine which genes are linked. I don't really understand how to look at the spores and determine if they are PD/NPD/T .... please help. I will rate very highly if gives useful tips/replies.

Explanation / Answer

ex. however, we can omitt number one seeing as how in each case it will be always be PD. so this gives us roughly PD˜NPD, so we can say they are not linked. this can be repeated for the other two cases

i hope this gives you some insight on how to go about the rest of the problem
