In 62.1 grams/mol of ethylene glycol, you have 38.7% Carbon,9.7% Hydrogen, and 51.6% Oxygen, which when multiplied out (bymaking the percents decimals) you have apporximately 24 grams ofCarbon, 6 grams of Hydrogen and 32.1 grams of Oxygen. Divide eachby their molar mass (24 grams of Carbon divided by 12.01 grams permole = approximately 2 mol). You end up with 2 mol of Carbon, 6 molof Hydrogen, and 2 mol of Oxygen. The empirical formula is thefewest number (in the correct ratio) to still make up the element.(In this case, it would be 1::2::1).
