Question

Using orbital diagrams, give the number of unpaired electonsin each of the following
A) As       b)Co       c) Zr(4+)         d)Ag          e)Fe(3+)         F) P          G)Cu            H)Br+         I) Mn(2+)       J)Si            K) S      L) Ni(3+)    M) Cd        N)V(2+) * of course these are alot, so if you can show about 3-4 thatwould be okay too... Explanation / Answer

This is hard to shoqw typing but here it goes. for each orbital the orbital fills up with one electron eachbefore pairing up. So for As which has 5 electrons in itvalence shell the first two paired in the 4s orbital and the lastthree are in the 4p orbitals so the answer for As is 3. For b Co has 9 valence electrons. The first two fill upthe 4 s orbital and then the next 5 fill up the orbital is the3d. Then the last two pair with two of the five. Leaving three unpaired b-3 I will give you the answers to the rest and you can draw thediagrams I will give you the answers to the rest and you can draw thediagrams c-0 d-1 e-3 f-3 g-1 h-2 i-3 j-2 k-2 l-5 m-0 n-1
