Hi, I just wanna know that what is the first thing that welook at when we are trying to arrange the acids and the bases inthe ascending or the descending order?? How are the double and thetriple bonds looked over and also what if there's a negativeor positive charge on the molecule? Explanation / Answer

The relative pKa values can be used to gauge acidity or basicity ofa compound. Remember the stronger the acid, the lower the pKa.The strength of acidity if also directly related to the stabilityof the conjugate base. The more stablethe conjugate base, the stronger the acid. When you are looking at bases, find the conjugate acids of thosespecies, then assign pKa values. The weaker the conjugate acid, the stronger thebase. For hydrocarbons, alkanes and alkenes have pKa's of 50 and 45respectively, while alkynes have pKa of 25 due to the sphybridization of the carbanion of the conjugate base. In general, compounds with negative charges are consider LewisBases, while those with positive charges are Lewis Acids. Althoughthe strength of Lewis compounds cannot be quantified using pKavalues if they do not have a dissociable hydrogen.
