Question

A pharmicist is preparing 1.000L of an aqueous isopropylalcohol solution that is 37.5% (v/v) isopropyl alcohol in water. How many mL of isopropyl alcohol must she measure to make thissolution? How many mL of water does she have to add? I have no idea how to start this. I don't know if i need touse molar mass or a mass-volumeratio(m1v1=m2v2)?? Explanation / Answer

Percent volume by volume is simply the volume of solutedivided by the volume of solution times 100%. The overallvolume will be 1 L = 1000 mL; so you need a volume of alcohol thatwhen divided by 1000 and multiplied by 100 will give 37.5. The equation will be: (x/1000)*100 = 37.5 solve for x: x = 375 mL; so you need 375 mL ofalcohol for the solution. The rest of the solutionwill be made up of water; so 1000 mL - 375 mL = 625 mL ofwater. To check your answer: (375/(375 + 625))*100 = 37.5% Hope this helps.
