Question

Which of the following are true for the Crystal Field Model of anoctahedral complex ion? Consider the ions to be first-seriestransition metals.

a) Two of the 3d orbitals point directly at ligands

b) t2 orbitals are less stable than e orbitals

c) A small crystal field splitting enrgy results in a diamagneticcomplex

d) The low--spin case gives maximum unpaired electrons

e) For a given ligand, Cr2+ causes a greater increase inthe crystal field splitting energy than does Cr3+
think about the amount of coulombic attraction between the metalion and the electrons on the ligands
and the closer the ligands, the more interaction there is with thed orbitals on the metal ion

f) Cl- causes a greater increase in thecrystal field splitting enery than does H2O

g) The splitting of energy (E) of 3d orbitals occurs in the metalion

Explanation / Answer

a) In case of octahedral complexes, eg orbitals arepointed directly towards the ligands. They are two in number. So the statement is true. b ) Once the repulsion are started no more the degeneracy ofthe the 3d orbitals remains. It is splitted into two sets oforbitals. Highly repelled orbitals posses higher energy and lessstability. Basically  eg orbitals arehiher in energy. So they are unstable and t2g orbitalsare stable and posses less energy. So the statement is false. c) magnetic properties are based upon the unpaired electronsbut not on the unpaired electrons. So the statement is wrong. d) In low spin case all strong field ligands arepresent. So the electrons are getting paired against the Hund'srule. So in this case generally we can except less number ofunpaired electrons. In case of high spin complex compounds morenumber of unpaired electrons are present. So the statement isfalse. e) Crystal field splitting energy depends upon thecharge of the central metal atom. As the charge on the centralmetal atom increases attractive forces increases. So the repulsiveinteractions increases. So for Cr3+ crystal field splitting energy ismore. So the statement is false. f) In the spectrochemical series haloigens falls on the leastend and then comes the oxygen donars. So H2O is showing greater splitting than thechloride ion. So the statement is false. g) Splitting is happening in 3d orbitals. So thestatement is true.
