Question

Chapter 7 problem 26:

A solution containing 80. g of NaNO3 in 75 g ofH2O at 50 degrees C is cooled to 20 deg. C. Solubility of NaNO3 is as follows:
88 g NaNO3 dissolves in 100 g.H2O at 20 deg. C
114 g. NaNO3 dissolves in 100 g H2O at 50deg. C
a) How many grams of NaNO3 remain in solution at20 deg. C?
b) How many grams of solid NaNO3 crystallizedafter cooling?

This is what I've worked out so far:
85.5 g of NaNO3 will dissolve in 75 g. H2O at 50 deg.C
66.0 g of NaNO3 will dissolve in 75 g. H2O at 20 deg.C
This is as far as I got, but it would seem to me that when the T iscooled to 20 deg C that you would have 66g of salt remaining in thesolution and if you subtract 66 g from 80 g, that's whatcrystallized? Am I on the right track here?

Thank you

Explanation / Answer

88 g NaNO3 dissolves in 100 g. H2O at20 deg. C 114 g. NaNO3 dissolves in 100 g H2O at 50deg. C . In 75 g of water, 66.0 g of NaNO3 will dissolve at 20 C and 85.5 g at 50 C . When dissolved at 50 C, the solution can dissolve 85.5 g ofNaNO3 But only 80. g of NaNO3 are dissolved When the solution is cooled to 20 C, only 66 g can remaindissolved. This is the answer for part (a) . The rest of the salt crystallizes out. = 80 g - 66.0 g = 14 g . Yes, you're right
