Question
I mixed tolulene with Br without the use of a catalyst and thecolor turned clear, but there was also cyclohexane in themixture. Did I get a reaction? What reaction did Iget? Did the cyclohexane react with the bromine and not thetolulene? When I mixed cyclohexene with bromine and cyclohexane, the solutionagain turned clear, but I don't know if I got an additon reactionor not or what is reacting with what. Did the cyclohexenereact with Bromine or was it the cyclohexane that reacted withbromine?
What's throwing me off is that instead of mixing an alkane and thenan alkene with just bromine in two separate experiments, ourteacher added cyclohexane to the mix of Bromine? Is shetrying to torture us?
Explanation / Answer
Benzene and toluene do not react with bromine in the absence of acatalyst. so cyclohexane react with bromines and color turnedclear. All alkenes have a common feature i.e they contains a carbon-carbondouble bond. A carbon- carbon double which is electron rich reactswith electrophiles to gives an addition product. so in thisreaction cyclohexene react with bromine
