Question

Can You please just interpret this for me with the equation rather than the structures in the equation.
So like how would I write both equations not using any strucutres? Also do these chemical equations describe a chemical behavior or process?

What kind of chemical reaction is occuring?

On the other hand, diphenyl carbonate is produced from dimethyl carbonate, which is readily manufactured from methanol, carbon monoxide and oxygen in the liquid phase, in presence of copper(ll) chloride, CuCl2: Cuc2 CH30 2CH3OH(I) + ½Og(g) + CO(g)-> -o)+H200) CH3O dimethyl carbonate Dimethyl carbonate, when heated with phenol in the liquid phase, forms the diphenyl carbonate: OH CH30. heat C-O)+ 2CH30H(l) CH3O phenol diphenyl carbonate

Explanation / Answer

Synthesis of dimethylcarbonate

The preparation of dimethylcarbonate from methanol, carbon monoxide in oxygen atmosphere proceeds well over a copper catalyst. This is an addition reaction wherein, two molecules of methanol adds to the carbon monoxide molecule to form dimethylcarbonate.

2CH3OH + CO + 1/2O2 --> (CH3O)2CO + H2O

The process describes a green methodology for the formation of dimethylcarbonate without any waste and by using less expensive copper catalyst. the reaction occurs at a gas-liquid interphase on a solid surface.

The formed compound, dimethylcarbonate is like an ester with an -COOCH3 group.

Therefore, when this ester is treated with another alcohol such as phenol in the liquid phase, it readily undergoes an transesterification reaction to form transesterified product diphenyl carbonate and looses two moelcules of methanol.

(CH3O)2CO + 2C6H5OH ---> (PhO)2CO + 2CH3OH
