Question
Experiment 5b steam distillation
Label the bands in the IR spectrum which coresspond to the functional groups in the oil (from cloves) you isolated. Which bands in the IR correspond to the functional groups of eugenol? List frequencies and corresponding functional groups (second IR graph). Then compare your IR spectrum of your recovered oil to the library spectrum of eugenol (first IR spectrum graph attached) and what are some attributes that could have affected your results.
I have attached the IR's below:

IR (infra red) spectroscopy is a key technique in identifying the functional groups. As the name suggests the oil eugenol is a phenol hence you have to expect an alcoholic or phenolic OH group in the range of 3200-3300 cm-1.
In the eugenol spectra you can find a peak at 3525 correspoding to phenolic OH which is also present in the recorded spectra at 5417 cm-1.
The sp3 hybridised alkyl C-H streching and Sp2 hybridised alkyl strechingwill be showed around 2800cm-1.
2844 and 2949 in original eugenol spectra coresponds to those CH strechings which are present in recorded spectra around 2943cm-1 (there are many peaks and its difficult read the values hope you got the position i am mentioning)
ANother important peak in C=C streching around 1600cm-1
you can see a peak atv1639 in original spectra corresponding to this vibration and same can be found in recorded spectra around 1636 cm-1
Other than mainly C-O straching and other bending modes of vibration can be found but since they fall into fingerprint region o the spectra its difficult to recognise them.
The presence impurities in the recorded samples may give extra peak which are absent in original sample for example there is a peak around 1704 in recorded sample but which is absent in original eugenol.
