Question

Which reaction coordinate diagram below illustrate the fastest exothermic reaction? a) b) c) d) 1. Reaction coordinate diagram a 2. Reaction coordinate diagram b 3. Reaction coordinate diagram c. 4. Reaction coordinate diagram d. Question 4 In a reaction that increased in rate due to an increase in concentration, the increase in rate was due to a. the heat generated by increasing the concentration b. the increased number of molecular collisions. c. the increased energy of activation. d. all of these choices are correct. Question 5 A reaction that is endothermic presents an energy diagram that a. has a high energy of activation, but has products just barely lower in energy than the reactants b. looks like an energy diagram for an exothermic reaction, but with a higher energy of activation requirement. c. has no energy of activation, but has products that are significantly lower in energy than the reactants. d. has products that have more energy than the reactants and will generally absorb energy.

Explanation / Answer

1) Option d represents the fastest exothermic reaction.

Reason- The reaction in which energy is released is exothermic. This means that the energy of products formed is less than that of the reactants. Hence, option a and b can be eliminated (as in both the energy of products is more than that of reactants). Activation energy is the energy required to be supplied to the reactants to reach the transition state. In other words it is the energy difference between the energy of reactants and of transition state. Lower the activation energy needed, faster the reaction will proceed. Since in option d, activation energy required is less as that of option c, it represents the fastest exothermic reaction.

Question 4 : option b

In a reaction that increase in rate due to increase in concentration, the increased rate is due to the increased no of molecular collisions.

The product formation depends on the number of molecular collisions occuring in proper orientation, the energy supplied and the stability of the transition state. In this case, the number of reactant molecules is increased, so the collisions will also increase thereby increasing the rate of reaction.

Question 5 :  option d

The reaction in which energy is absorbed is an endothermic reaction. This means that the energy of products is more than the energy of reactants.
