Question

Research in your lab is focusing on the reaction: 2A + 2B C + D After performing many different experiments, you have determined that the rate law for this experiment is: rate-k[A]2[B]. You and your graduate student have come up with six possible mechanisms for the reaction. How many of the following mechanisms are plausible mechanisms based on the rate law information you have? Mechanism 1 Mechanism 2 slow fast slow fast fast Mechanism 3 Mechanism 4 fast slow fast slow fast Mechanism 6 A+A+BC+Dslow Mechanism 5 AA + BE fast 3 2 4 O 1 Submit Answer Incorrect. Tries 1/2 Previous Tries

Explanation / Answer

Mechanism 6

A + A + B === C + D slow

rate law for this is K * A * A * B = K [A]2 [B] , mechanism 6 is possible

Always take the rate law from the slowest step

Mechanism 1

A + A ==== E

rate = k * A * A = k * A2, this is not possible

Mechanism 2

we take the slowest step

r = k *[A]*[B], not possible

So only 1 is possible

The other mechanisms involve intermediate E which is unstable and the rate doesnt depend on it
