Question

4. Using the data in the table below, explain the structural bases for the differences in boiling points or solubilities as asked for compounds the following sets of Compound Boiling Point (°C) Solubility in Water 1.5-hexadiene 2.4-hexadiene 60 80 86 130 69 110 97 Insoluble Insoluble Insoluble Insoluble Insoluble Slightly soluble Very soluble 1,5-hexadiyne 2,4-hexadiyne hexane 1-butanol 1-propanol A) Explain the relative boiling points of hexane, 1-propanol, and 1-hexanol; describe the kinds of intermolecular interactions that occur between molecules of the compounds and explain their structural bases.

Explanation / Answer

decrease in order of the compounds is,

1 - hexanol > 1 - propanol > hexane

Because, both hexanol and propanol have a - OH group which is responsible to form intermolecular hydrogen bond among their molecules. And between hexanol and propanol , due to higher molecular mass of hexanol it has higher vanderwaal's force of attraction and hence it has high boiling point htan propanol. But hexane has only weak london forces among its molecules. So, hexane has weak boiling point than propanol.
