Question
4. The correct trend for the first ionization energy would be,
C) K < Al < Mg < N
K can readily loose its lone valence electron to reach noble gas stable configuration. Al has three valence electrons that it can loose easily to gain noble gas configuration, higher charge means more attraction to +vely charged nucleus and thus higher energy required to remove valence shell electrons. Mg can loose 2 electrons to reach noble gas configuration but it has filled 2s orbital to maximum, removal of electron is higher energy than K with half filled s orbital. N has half octet, which is a stable configuration and thus removal of electron from such a system is high energy requirement.
Explanation / Answer
E) ii, iv 4. Select the correct sequence of the elements Al, K, Mg and N in order of increasing first ionization energy: A) K
