Question
Answer
d) 1and 3
Explanation
Statement ii) is not correct statement because ethers do not have hydrogenbonds. For hydrogen bonds the molecule should be polar and Hydrogen atom should be bonded to highly electronegative atoms like , Oxygen , Nitrogen or Flourine but the ethers are non polar and in ether Hydrogen atom is not attached to Oxygen , Nitrogen or Flourine. So, there is no possiblity of Hydrogen bond in ethers.
Statements i) and iii) are correct statements and it is related to hiher viscosity of vegitable oils than diethyl ether because viscosity is related to intermolecular forces ,larger the intermolecular force higher the Viscosity and intermolecular force in turn releted to Chain length , larger the chain length higher the intermolecular force. As a non non polar compound vegitable oils having london dispersion force as the inter molecular force and lonndon dispersion force is highly influenced by chain length of the molecule, when chain length is larger london dispersion force is higher.
Explanation / Answer
17) Which of the following are valid reasons why vegetable oil has a greater viscosity than diethyl ether, CH3OCH3? (1) Oil molecules have long chains that become entangled. (i) Unlike diethyl ether, oil molecules are not held together by hydrogen bonds. (in) Intermolecular forces are greater for the larger oil molecules. 1 only 2 only c. 3 only d. 1 and 3 S 2 and 3
