Question
3) (a) The NH3 molecule is pyramidal in shape. In NH3, the N-H bonds have a dipole moment directed toward the N atom. The N atom has a pair of non-bonding electrons which contribute to the overall dipole moment. The molecule therefore has a net dipole moment.
(b) The PCl5 molecule is trigonal bipyramidal. Three Cl atoms are directed along the equatorial region while two Cl atoms take up axial orientations. The bond moments of the axial P-Cl bonds cancel each other. The resultant of two equatorial P-Cl bonds is equal and opposite to the third P-Cl bond moment. Therefore, the net dipole moment is zero and the molecule is non-polar.
(c) XeF4has polar Xe-F bonds. The individual bond moments in XeF4 cancel each other and hence, XeF4 has no resultant dipole moment and the molecule is therefore, non-polar.
