Question
oil is purified or refined through a process called oal distillation. In this process the different com fractitsof oil (lubricating oil, grease, gasoline, natural gas, P are separated by distillation. What do you conclude elout the physical properties of the different components? f liquid crystals have an orderly shape like solids, how do 23. Ds they act like liquids? s24. Do you think liquid crystals would have a low melting point? . Why or why not? 025. In addition to the obvious weight reduction, what are some “ ps other advantages of LCD monitors over the traditional CRT monitors?Explanation / Answer
22. In fractional distillation process mixtures of different liquid are seperated on the basis of their difference in boiling point. The component with lowest boiling point get vapourised first and is collected at the top of the distillating column and the one with higest boiling point is collected at the bottom; rest are collected in between this two components.
Here the mixture of different components of oil which is given in the question will be collected on the basis of their difference in boiling point.Hence the physical property of boiling point varies in each component.
Lubricating oil has the highest boiling point ( >350 C) then the grease then comes gasoline and natural gas.Natural gas has the least boiling point of less than 20 C.
lubricating oil > grease > gasoline > natural gas ( boiling point)
23.
In solid the arrangement of molecule is regular with a regularly repeating pattern in all direction and the molecules are held by strong intermolecular forces in all direction but in liquid crystal the molecular arrangement is randomm in some direction and orderly in other and also, in liquid crystal the forces between two layers are weak and hence one layer can slide over the other. This results in a fluid like behaviour.
24
It is not necessary that a liquid crystal would have a low melting point. This is because the solid which exhibit liquid crystal behaviour when heated , have strong intermolecular forces in some direction and weak in other directions so when this solid is heated the weak bonds are overcome and liquid crystal is formed. On further heating strong bonds are broken and then only it changes into liquid form.Example cholestrol myristate shows such type of behaviour and it has b.p. of 86 "C.
25.
The other advantages are LCD moniters
a ) consumes less power
b ) much brighter screen due to high peak intensity.
c ) the flickering of the screen is reduced to minimal as LCD screen has high refresh rate then CRT.
