Question
Explain step by step as clear as possible!Thanks Antimony (Sb) is obtained by heating pulverized stibnite (Sb2S3) with scrap iron and drawing off the molter antimony from the bottom of the reaction vessel. Suppose that 6 kg of stibnite and 2.5 kg of iron turnings are heated together to produce 2 kg of Sb metal. MW of Sb2S3, Fe, and Sb are 339.7, 55.85, and 121.8 respectively. The extent of the reaction is and the yield is O 8.2 gmol and 1/3rd X4.1 gmol and 2/3rd O 8.2 gmol and 2/3rd O 16.4 mol and 1/3rd
Explanation / Answer
Following reaction occur:
Sb2S3 + 3Fe --------->2Sb+3FeS
Data given:
Sb2S3= 6kg
So mole of Sb2S3= weight/MW=6 kg/339.7 kg/kmol=0.0177 kmol
Fe=2.5 kg
So mole of Fe=2.5/55.85=0.0447 kmol
Sb=2 kg
Sb mole=2/121.8=0.0164 kmol
Solution:
Here Sb2S3=0.0177 kmol
Fe=0.0447 kmol
Now as per stoichiometry
1 mol of Sb2S3 reacted with 3 mol of Fe to produce 2 mol of Sb and 3 mol of FeS
So if 0.0177 kmol Sb2S3 reated then we required=3*0.0177=0.0531 kmol Fe
But we have 0.0447 kmol
So limiting reactant is Fe
excess reactant is Sb2S3
So as per stoichiometry,
Sb2S3 required=0.0447/3=0.0149 kmol
Excess Sb2S3=0.0177-0.0149=0.0028 kmol=2.8 gmol
So % excess=(0.0177-0.0149)/0.0149*100=18.8%
Yield=as kg of Sb formed per kg of Sb2S3=2 kg Sb/6kgof Sb2S3=1/3
