Question 13 (of 14) value 10.00 points Ch. Ex. 81 - Metal Content of an Alloy Guided Solution Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Varying the mass percentages of the two metals produces brasses with different properties. A brass calledyellow zine has high ductility and strength and is 34.0%-37.0% zinc by mass. (a) Find the mass range (in g) of copper in 254 g of yellow zinc. (b) What is the mass range (in g) of zine in a sample of yellow zine that contains 10.1 gof copper? Step 1: (a) Mass copper = total mass-mass zinc Upper bouna -254-((254 g( ecti:) (select) mass copper 254 g (254 g) (select) References eBook & Resources Multipart Answer Difficulty: 3

Explanation / Answer

In yellow metal

Zinc % range = 34% to 37%

Copper % range = (100-34)% to (100-37)%

= 66% to 63%

Part a

Mass range of copper in 254 g yellow metal

= 254*0.66 to 254*63

= 167.64 (upper bound) to 160.02 (lower bound)

Alternatively,

Upper bound

Mass of copper = 254 g - [254 g (34/100)] = 167.64 g

Lower bound

Mass of copper = 254 g - [254 g (37/100)] = 160.02 g

Range = 160.02 g to 167.64 g

Part b

Lower bound

Mass of zinc = 10.1 g copper [ (34% Zn) /( 66 % Cu)]

= 5.203 g

Upper bound

Mass of zinc = 10.1 g copper [ (37% Zn) /( 63 % Cu)]

= 5.932 g

Range = 5.203 g to 5.932 g
