Aeration System:-Aeration system is one of the most critical part of a fermentor.Two separate aeration devices are used to ensure proper aeration in fermentor. These devices are sparger and impeller.

The size and position of the impeller in the fermentor depends upon the size of the fermentor. Ideally, the impeller should be 1/3 of the fermentors diameter fitted above the base of the fermentor. The number of impeller may vary from size to size to the fermentor.

Baffles:-The baffles are used to prevent a vortex and to improve aeration efficiency. They are metal strips roughly one-tenth of the fermentors diameter and attached radially to the walls.

Cooling Jacket:Cooling jacket is necessary for sterilization of the nutrient medium and for removal of the heat

Volume of reactor = Mass flow rate (KG/DAY)*TIME(DAY) /Density (KG/M3)

Assume density =1200 KG/M3,Mass flow rate = 5*1000 KG/DAY (5 tons/day)

V= 5*1000*1/1200

Volume of reactor=4.167 m3

b) H/D =1.5 ( Tumb rule) Height/Diameter shd be 1.5

Volume = 3.14 * D^2/4 *H

=3.14*D^2/4*1.5 D

4.167=3.14*(3/8)*D^3

Solve D^3= 3.5388

Hence D =1.52 m
