Question
5. Different grades of gasoline stored in underground tanks at gas stations have different levels of acceptable impurities. Benzene impurity in gasoline is now limited by regulation to a maximum of 0.62 vol% (-2500 ppm liquid phase concentration) to address safety concerns. a. Is the benzene concentration in the air above a pool of gasoline (instructive interpretation: vapor-liquid equilibrium) greater than or less than the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)? Assume the following: T -25 C and ideal gas conditions. b. If the temperature of the system increases, does concentration of benzene in air increase or decrease? Why? c. Bases on your answers to part a and b, would you encourage your teenage brother/sister to apply for a part-time summer job at a gas station?Explanation / Answer
a) Maximum volume % is 0.62 vol% or 2500 ppm in liquid phase, and in air maximum permissible limit is 5 ppm.
limit is under 0.62 vol % so it is safer to use. but long exposure may cause illness. ideal gas law PV = nRT
b) If Temperature is increase vapor pressure of benzene increases, hence concentration of benzene increases. its become less safer
c) As above discussed we are dealing with toxic substance so we will not encourage teenage to apply for summer training job
