Is an exothermic reaction necessarily spontaneous? Explain why or why not 2. Calcium oxide and carbon dioxide combine spontaneously at 298 K under standard state conditions (Pco2-1atm) to produce calcium carbonate. Cao (s) CO2 (g) - CaCO3 (s) a) Based on the reaction stoichiometry and the phases of the reactants and products, is the entropy change for this reaction AS negative or positive? Explain your answer b) Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic? response. Briefly justify your answer using an equation in your c) Should the temperature be raised or lowered in order to make the reaction non-spontaneous under standard state conditions (Pco2-1 atm)? Briefly explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1. No , exothermic reaction is not necessarily spontaneous .

As spontaneity of a reaction is decided by positive or negative value of gibbs free energy (deltaG) . If deltaG is negative , then reaction is spontaneous , and if deltaG is positive , then reaction is non-spontaneous .

Also , deltaG = deltaH - TdeltaS

So , for an exothermic reaction , deltaH is negative , but deltaS may be positve or negative , therefore , only exothermic condition does not decide the spontaniety of a reaction and so , exothermic reaction is not necessarily spontaneous .
