Bio Chem!!!!! One or more Questions may have more than one answer

1a For which of the following is NET glycogen breakdown inhibited when the cell is stimulated by adrenaline? CHOOSE ALL(that means more than one) of the following that are consistent with these cellular conditions.

a. High ATP concentration in the liver cell

b. High ATP concentration in the muscle cell

c. High glucose concentration in the liver cell.

d. High glucose concentration in the muscle cell.

1b.A liver cell with high cellular ATP and low cytosolic glucose is stimulated by glucagon. CHOOSE ALL(that means more than one) of the following that are consistent with these cellular conditions.

a. The catalytic rate of phosphofructokinase is inhibited by ATP

b. Glucose is exported from the cell

c. the rate of glycogen breakdown is greater than the rate of glycolysis

d. the rate of glycolysis is inhibited

e. the rate of glycogen phosphorylase is inhibited by ATP

f. Glucose concentration is rising in the cytosol

Explanation / Answer

1a.

a. High ATP concentration in the liver cell ( ATP being an allosteric inhibitor of Glycogen Phosphorylase inhibits the breakdown of Glycogen)

b. High ATP concentration in the muscle cell (Same reason as above)

c. High glucose concentration in the liver cell. (Glucose like ATP inhibits the enzyme phosphorylase causing the breakdown of Glycogen to be inhibited).

d. High glucose concentration in the muscle cell. (Same reason as c)

1b

a. The catalytic rate of phosphofructokinase is inhibited by ATP ( ATP is an allosteric inhibitor of the enzyme PFK)

c. the rate of glycogen breakdown is greater than the rate of glycolysis. (Since Glucose concentration in the cell is low, more Glucose must be produced by Glycogen breakdown)

d. The rate of Glycolysis is dependent on the concentration of Substrate which is Glucose, hence it will be inhibited.

e. The rate of glycogen phosphorylase is inhibited by ATP. Glycogen Phosphorylase is an enzyme that converts Glycogen to Glucose-1 Phosphate and is inhibited by high ATP concentrations.

f. Glucose concentration as a result of the cascading response to breakdown of Glycogen rises in the cytoplasm
